About
the Ice House Inn...
In the 1930’s, the Ice House Inn began as Austintown’s only ice
distribution center and was then known as White House Ice, founded by
Joseph and Mary Mousie. Located on RFD N. 5 (now known as Mahoning
Ave.) and next door to what was to become the original Ice House Inn.
Joseph started the tavern as a way to supplement his ice business
figuring that he already had the means for keeping the beer cold. The
advent of refrigerators necessitated the bar becoming his main source
of income as the ice industry gradually died out. Some brands of beer
sold there included Leisy’s, Mug Ale, Black Forest, Genesee (sold
for 5 to 10 cents per bottle) and Renner’s (a Youngstown brewed
beer).
In 1960, his son John, one of three children, took over the
business and in 1961, turned the sign upside down as a way to increase
notice and thereby, more business. Many rumors persist today as for
the reason why the sign is upside down and people still make mention
of it as if, by chance, it somehow escaped the owner’s attention.
In 1987, John sold the property to Pizza Hut and decided to move
the tavern to the location at which it currently resides; the corner
of Rt. 46 and Webb road. Sadly, John succumbed to illness, that, along
with other issues prevented the opening of the bar at its current
location until 1992, when his sons Mike and John took over.
Enjoying success and understanding the importance of newness, the
bar was completely remodeled in 2001 with a nostalgic and sports theme
and today the Ice House Inn has proven itself to be a story of success
and the American Dream.
